Grand Music of Tang is a suite of 24 classical guitar pieces, each of which was inspired by a specific poem from the Tang Dynasty of China (618-907 AD). This work was commissioned by Japanese classical guitarist Mr. Kazuhito Yamashita in 1999. For No. 23. Viewing the Moon, Thinking of You, the poem in Chinese and its English translation are shown below.

望月懷遠
(張九齡)

海上生明月,
天涯共此時。
情人怨遙夜,
竟夕起相思。
滅燭憐光滿,
披衣覺露滋。
不堪盈手贈,
還寢夢佳期。
Viewing the Moon, Thinking of You
(Zhang Jiu-Ling, 678-740 AD, China)

As the bright moon shines over the sea,
From far away you share this moment with me.
How parted lovers hate the lonely night!
Till dawn I think of no one but thee.
To enjoy the moon I blow out the candle stick.
Please put on your nightgown for the dew is thick.
I offer you a handful of moonlight but in vain,
Back to my dream hoping for a reunion quick.
